Art is chaos taking shape

With all the mayhem of putting my solo exhibition together, I understandably haven’t had a chance to do my October studio insights until just now.

My solo exhibition, The Castle in the Sky, opened on November 13th, with a wonderfully warm celebration. Thank you to all those who have come through already and shown their support.

October feels like a distant memory at this point, but I’m committed to documenting my thoughts from each month regardless.

CREATE: Exhibition Prep

This was the busiest month I’ve had in years, as I crammed to bring together all the various in-progress floating parts into one cohesive exhibition. I had a blast working with my close friend Kane Wills to sketch logo ideas, then finalising the logo and poster design with collaborator Ferg. We also got in a couple of major shoots for the upcoming documentary, and on top of all this, I painted the final two pieces for the show. Yeah... everything was happening all at once, and my mind was in absolute chaos.

INSPIRE: Skullduggery

This is one of my most anticipated exhibitions every year, an epic mash of creepy artwork held at Thistle Hall for Halloween. Thankfully, I managed to find the time to go along, and as usual, it did not disappoint.

LEARN: Miro Collaboration

This month, I was deep into creating the branding and design assets for my exhibition in collaboration with Ferg. To do this, we used an online interactive whiteboard tool called Miro. It lets you place images, text, links and files, while updating all changes in real time. This was my first time using it, and we both loved the process. We often worked at opposite times, so it was like Christmas every time I opened the board to see what he had created while I was away. It was so exciting to see the board evolve and grow over time into some chaotic looking beast. We both found it invaluable to the process, and I’ll definitely be making use of Miro in the future.

PLAN: Sculpture Work

I plan to be on-site at Te Auaha for the majority of my exhibition period, which runs from 13th to 30th November. I’ll be experimenting on a new sculpture piece, extending upon this shell sculpture that I made a while ago. I’m feeling totally burnt out on painting, and I thought this would be a great opportunity to finally sink my teeth into some sculpture experimentation. I really have very little idea what I’m doing and what I’ll achieve, but I’m sure it will be lots of fun regardless!
