Studio Insights - June 2026

New month, New format

Over the past 2 years I’ve written my Studio Insights blog with the same format each month. The entire process has been such a fun journey, and I loved how each section challenged me to think carefully through the month.

However, it’s started to feel unsustainable, and so it’s time to make a change. Moving forward, I’m condensing everything into one email, 300 words or less. I’ll pick just one thing to highlight each entry (could be: inspiring art, new idea, latest creation, something I learnt etc) plus any important updates. Ironically I delayed this entry because I hadn’t figured out how I wanted to change the format yet…

June was busy, but not really for the studio… I got ready to move house, and went to Fiji to escape the horrible Wellington weather - only to get stuck trying to return!

Lancaster Press Fiji

This little art gallery/studio was found hidden amongst the bush after a rather uncertain journey down a dirt road with my family. I was in charge of driving, and I'm drawn to any promise of art like a moth to the flame. We were greeted by a lovely Australian couple, who had converted their home into an art gallery and printmaking workshop, hosting 'art residencies in paradise'.

We were promptly held hostage by the artist (a man in flip-flops and a tropical shirt) as he explained in great detail the entire printmaking and residency process. I was fascinated, and delighted. As for my parents…not so much! He showed us through each artwork, created by various artists who stayed on-site and worked in his workshop over the years.

I've always been interested in Residencies; I've just never found the right opportunity. I always imagined somewhere more.. extravagant? Perhaps Italy, in the heart of the Renaissance. I definitely didn't picture somewhere like Fiji, but I was quite attracted to the idea of what I could dream up in such an unexpected environment. Printmaking is also something I've never delved into but would love to try properly. Maybe I'll be taking another special trip to Fiji?
